Derbyshire Waste Treatment

Derbyshire Waste Treatment, a joint venture between United Utilities and Interserve (Resource Recovery Solutions – RRS) have appointed GHA Livigunn as design consultants on the £500m Derby Waste venture.

The contract will handle 190,000 tonnes of Derbyshire waste annually, diverting some 180,000 tonnes from landfill and help to manage black bag waste more sustainably and help combat climate change by diverting waste from landfill. The development will export 8MW of electricity, enough to power 14,000 homes.

About the plant

The plant, to be operated by United Utilities, will employ a clean-burn process known as gasification. Not only will the resulting residue be used as an aggregate in concrete products, the process will also produce electricity that can be sold to the national grid.

The Plant Facts

  • Will divert 180,000 tonnes of waste from landfill, the equivalent of 23,904 double-decker buses.
  • Save 48,000 tonnes of CO2 each year, the equivalent of taking 16,000 cars off the road.
  • Generate enough electricity to power 14,000 homes.
