GHA Livigunn delighted on ia+’s recent Construction News Quality Award for Hodder SR

GHA Livigunn were delighted to support United Utilities’ Integrated Alliance (ia+), winners of the Environmental Project Award for the Hodder Service Reservoir at the recent Construction News Quality Awards 2009 (CNQ) held in London.

The £13 million new service reservoir, to supply treated water to Blackburn, the Ribble Valley, Preston and Fylde, provided some challenging environmental design issues for GHA Livigunn, who were appointed by ia+ as lead design consultants for the project.

The prestigious CNQ Awards acknowledges the quality demonstrated by the UK construction industry in ten different categories and the award ceremony brings together hundreds of the construction industry’s professionals.  The judges picked out Hodder Service Reservoir for the environmental award for “An excellent example of a coherent and integrated project team working through planning, design, construction and operation to deliver environmental excellence.”

One environmental hurdle to cross was that the reservoir was to be located within an area of outstanding natural beauty, close to a biological heritage and archaeological site and only accessible through quiet narrow lanes and over two listed bridges.  A new access road was created in line with Forestry Commission standards with sustainable drainage systems and surfacing using crushed carboniferous limestone excavated from the main site.  The design of the reservoir to sink the structure into excavated land, buried beneath top soil and camouflaged with native trees and wildflowers, minimised the impact of the construction on this beauty spot.

Stewart Tennant, GHA Livigunn’s Director, who accepted the CNQ Award together with Sean Mooney and Victoria Pollard from KMI+ said: “This project succeeded in all its challenges because of the integrated approach to detail design, construction and operation from the start.  For us, it was a total success to design a project to blend in as much as possible with the surrounding landscape and with minimal environmental impact. ”
