Rock climbing, orienteering… and at least £10,000 raised for WaterAid!
Expecting to raise at least £10,000 for WaterAid and support water and sanitation projects in the third world, the eighth GHA Livigunn challenge took place over the weekend of 13th and 14th September in the Forest of Bowland.
With the chance to take part in orienteering, rock climbing, archery, raft-building and shooting, the bi-annual challenge always generates considerable interest amongst customers and associates of the multi-discipline engineering consultancy, GHA Livigunn – and this year’s event was no exception.
From ‘Aardvarks’ to ‘Ark-wrights’
In total eleven teams entered the 2008 event. They included: the Balfour Beatty ‘Beefies’ and ‘Babies'; The Electricity Alliance ‘Ninja Squirrels’; the Laing O’Rourke ‘Centrals’ and ‘Aardvarks’ and ‘Noah and the Ark-wrights’ (Taylor Young Architects). There were also teams from AEW Architects and UU Framework contractors KMI+, as well as ‘Lady and the Tramps’, ‘Numero Uno’ and ‘5th Preston West’ all from GHA Livigunn.
First place for ‘Beefies’
Not content with night orienteering, a ten-mile yomp and trying (unsuccessfully) to fish for their supper, several team members also embarked on some recreational mud-sliding. Despite starting Saturday’s stage with 3 team members carrying injuries the Balfour ‘Beefies’ had moved into first place by Saturday night, and proudly declared that ‘fat men can run’ before giving it their all on the Sunday to come charging home in first place.
Comments GHA Livigunn Director, Stewart Tennant, “Each time we run the challenge it seems to get bigger and better, the enthusiasm of the teams was fantastic and makes all the planning worthwhile”. A total of 80 competitors and marshals took part together to make the weekend a fun, highly memorable event.
“Most important of all,” adds Stewart Tennant, “It looks as though, through the generosity of everyone involved, we will raise £10,000 to help support the excellent work carried out by Wateraid around the world.
A cheque for the total amount raised during the 2008 challenge will be presented to WaterAid at The WaterAid Ball, taking part at Manchester’s Midland Hotel on 26th September 2008.
